Diabetes, noninsulin dependent

Also called type 2 diabetes, noninsulin-dependent diabetes occurs when a person’s body no longer produces enough insulin or can no longer use it properly (called insulin resistance). Insulin is needed to convert glucose – sugar – into energy for the body. While most people diagnosed with noninsulin-dependent diabetes are adults, a growing number of children and adolescents are diagnosed with this form of diabetes. Note: Estimates include one year of care for treating noninsulin-dependent diabetes (for example, physician visits, tests, medication and supplies, etc.).
